West Indies end their World Cup campaign with a victory against Afghanistan by 23 runs at the Headingly Cricket Ground in Leeds on Thursday night. Afghanistan ends their campaign with a loss as they lost all the matches in the world's biggest cricket event.
West Indies veteran Chris Gayle played his last World Cup game and scored a single digit on a batting friendly track. Let us have a look at the highlights of the 42nd World Cup encounter between West Indies and Afghanistan.
The Caribbean team skipper Jason Holder won the toss and decided to set the target for Afghanistan Cricket team.
West Indies made 2 changes, Kemar Roach and Even Lewis were replaced by Sunil Ambris and Shannon Gabriel in their playing XI.
Afghanistan also made 2 changes, Dawlat Zadran and Sayed Shirzad were included while Hashmatullah Shahidi and Hamid Hassan were ousted in their playing XI.
West Indies Innings
West Indies started the innings on a bad note as Chris Gayle got out for 7 runs in Zardan's bowling. Evin Lewis and Chris Gayle established the 21-run stand for the opening wicket partnership.
Another opener Evin Lewis made 58 runs in 78 balls with 6 beautiful hits to the fence and 2 outstanding hits over the rope. Evin Lewis got out in Rashid Khan's bowling in the 25th over.
Evin Lewis and Shai Hope added the 88-run stand for the second wicket partnership. Shai Hope was the top-scorer of the game as he scored 77 runs in 92 balls with 6 beautiful boundaries and 2 huge sixes into the stands.
Shimron Hetymer scored 39 runs in 31 balls with 3 hits to the rope and 2 hits above the rope before being out in Zadran's bowling.
Nicholas Pooran and skipper Jason Holder also played very well as they scored 58 and 45 respectively.
West Indies managed to post 311 runs on the board with the loss of 6 wickets in their quota of 50 overs. For Afghan, Zadran scalped 2 wickets while Shirzad, Nabi and Rashid Khan chipped a wicket each.
Chasing a mammoth target of 312, Afghan started the chase on the worst note as skipper Gulbadin Naib (5) got out for a very low score as he was trapped by Roach in the 2nd over.
Another opener Rahmat Shah scored 62 runs in 78 balls with 10 beautiful boundaries as he got out in Brathwaite's bowling in the 27th over. Rahmat Shah and Ikram Ali Khan stitched 133-run stand for the second wicket partnership.
Ikram Ali Khan was the top scorer in the game as he made 86 runs in 93 balls with 8 beautiful boundaries as he tried to chase the target but unluckily got out in Chris Gayle's bowling.
Najibullah Zadran and Asghar Afghan scored 31 runs and 40 runs. Remaining all the lower order batsmen failed to chase the target.
Finally, Afghanistan were bundled out for 288 runs, for Windies, Brathwaite scalped 4 wickets, roach bagged 3 wickets and Tomas, Gayle chipped a wicket each. Afghans are the only team not even win a single match in the tournament.
