Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 4 runs in an edge-of-the-seat thriller encounter at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Sunday.
Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni dismantled Punjab's bowling attack to score a blistering 79* but failed to steer the team to victory.
Apart from Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu (49) is the only batsman who felt comfortable in-front of Punjab's bowlers and all the other notable players went cheaply to lose the game.
Andrew Tye (2/47), Ravichandran Ashwin (1/32) and Mohit Sharma (1/47) were the wicket-takers in the high-scoring game for KXIP.
Earlier, Punjab failed to capitalise on the flying start given by openers Chris Gayle (63 runs in 33 balls), KL Rahul (37 off 22) as they got slowed down in the last five overs and eventually settled for 197.
The "Universe Boss" Chris Gayle smashed his second fastest fifty in the IPL.
KXIP: 197/7 (Chris Gayle 63, KL Rahul 37, Mayank Agarwal 30).
CSK: 193/5 (MS Dhoni 79, Ambati Rayudu 49).
Man-of-the-Match: Chris Gayle.
Orange Cap: Sanju Samson.
Purple Cap: Mayank Markande.
The next IPL match is between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Daredevils (DD) on April 16 (8 PM) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
