Happy Birthday Sukumar: 5 Films Of Ace Director That Redefined Telugu Cinema

After working as an erstwhile assistant director to maverick filmmakers VV Vinayak and Editor Mohan, Sukumar made his directorial debut with the film "Arya" (2004). The stupendous success of "Arya" became the testimony to Sukku's filmography.

This film was not only a path-breaking film but also ruffled the traditional Telugu audience with its newness. Now, Sukumar is the most sought after director in Telugu cinema. As Tollywood filmmaker Sukumar turns 47 today, we take a look at five films that redefined Telugu cinema.

Arya (2004)

While delivering a blockbuster in one's directorial debut is still a rarity, Sukumar is an exception. “Arya” was quite the sensation when it hit the screens. When Sukku made "Arya" with stylish star Allu Arjun, the film was an out-and-out money spinner at the box office. This triangle love story earned ₹160 million on a budget of ₹40 million.

Jagadam (2007)

The film narrates the story of a young man who fascinates to be a rowdy but later realises that it's not the right way to live. Though the film was a commercial failure, "Jagadam" became instrumental in establishing Sukumar as the creatively viable director.

100% Love (2011)

The story deals with the ego clashes between brother in law and sister in law. The film was a huge hit for its perfect blend of story and musical extravaganza.

1: Nenokkadine (2014)

The film happens to be Sukumar's first collaboration with prince Mahesh Babu. The film tells the story of a rockstar with psychological inhibitions who seeks revenge for his parent's death. Despite opening to mixed reviews from the critics and audience, the film that taken the film industry to next level both in terms of technicalities and content.

Nannaku Prematho (2016)

The film is about an intelligent man, son of a former successful entrepreneur who seeks revenge on a powerful business tycoon for his father's downfall. Despite a predictable storyline, the flick was lauded for its solid screenplay and an uncompromising performance of Jr NTR and Jagapati Babu.
