Biryani! The most preferred food during the Ramadan month. And, when it comes to the biryani varieties, you might have devoured chicken and mutton biryani many times. Of course! They are the most popular ones but besides them, have you ever tried the seafood biryani? Give them a try, you will love them too.

And today, the second Friday of this Ramadan month, we EeYuva are here with two delicious seafood biryani recipes namely, Fish Biryani and Prawn Biryani.

Fish Biryani

Ingredients To Cook Rice

2 cups rice; 1 small stick cinnamon; 2 cardamoms; 4 cloves; 1 tsp whole spices powder; 2 tbsp ghee; 2 tbsp lemon juice; 3 tbsp chopped mint leaves; 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves; Salt and water as required.

Ingredients For Gravy

½ Kg fish; 2 chopped onions; 2 chopped tomatoes; ¼ cup curd; 2 tbsp grated coconut; ½ tsp poppy seeds; 1 tbsp cashews (optional); 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste; ¼ tsp fenugreek seeds; ¼ tsp cumin seeds; ¼ tsp mustard seeds; 1 tbsp chopped green chillies; 1 tsp chilli powder; Oil as required.

Ingredients For Marination

2 tsp chilli powder; ½ tsp pepper powder; 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste; ½ tsp turmeric powder; salt to taste

Directions To Marinate Fish

Clean and marinate the fish pieces with marination ingredients and set it aside for 30 minutes. Shallow fry the marinated fish pieces for a few minutes and then take them into a plate.

Directions For Fish Gravy

  • Grind coconut, poppy seeds and cashews into a fine paste.
  • Heat ghee in a wok and add mustard, cumin, fennel seeds and let them splutter. Then add onions, ginger-garlic paste and saute it well till translucent. Add chopped tomatoes, green chillies, chilli powder, salt and allow them to cook until the tomatoes become tender.

  • Now, it's time to add fried fish, coconut paste and gently stir till the fish pieces get coated well with the gravy. Take it off the flame and set aside.

Directions For Fish Biryani

Meanwhile, wash and soak the rice with sufficient water for 30 minutes. Drain and cook the rice with fresh water by adding the rice ingredients until half boiled.

Grease the thick bottomed vessel and spread fish curry and half boiled rice layer by layer. Repeat the process until rice and fish curry is done. Spread the final layer with cooked rice and pour a tablespoon of ghee over the rice and let it cook on the stove for 10-15 minutes on low flame.

Garnish the rice with chopped mint leaves and deep fried onions to enhance the flavour and taste of the 'Fish Biryani'

Prawns Biryani

Ingredients You Require

Rice - 1 cup; Prawns - 1 cup; Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tbsp; Whipped curd - ½ cup; Green chillies - 3; Red chilli powder - 1 tbsp; Chopped onions - 2 medium size; Ghee - 3 tbsp; 3 springs chopped coriander leaves; 3 springs chopped mint; Salt to taste; Oil as required; Water - 2 cups;

Spices You Need

Mace - 1 small piece; Bay leaf - 2; Cinnamon - 2 small pieces; Cloves - 5; Caraway seeds - 1 tsp; Coriander powder - 1 tsp; Whole spices powder - 1 tsp; Turmeric powder - ½ tsp; Fennel seeds - 1 tsp; Green cardamom - 2 pods

Method to Cook Rice

Wash and soak the rice for half an hour. Boil the soaked rice along with fresh water, a tablespoon of ghee, 1 bay leaf, 1 piece of cinnamon, 3 cloves, ½ tsp of fennel seeds, salt and 1 cardamom until 80-85% cooked. Drain the water and set aside.

Method to Prepare Biryani

  • Meanwhile, marinate the prawns with ginger-garlic paste, chilli powder, coriander powder, salt and turmeric, whole spices powder for half an hour.

  • Heat a tablespoon of ghee and some oil in a wok and fry the onions until golden brown and take some onions into a plate and set it aside for garnishing.

  • Then add the remaining cloves, cinnamon, bay leaf, mace, caraway seeds, fennel seeds, slitted green chillies, cardamom until a nice fragrance comes.

  • Now, add marinated prawns and fry them for 3-5 minutes. Then add whipped curd and let it cook for 5 more minutes with occasional stirring.

  • It's time to add cooked rice on the top of the fried prawns. Garnish the rice with chopped coriander leaves, chopped mint, remaining ghee, fried onions and let it cook for 5 more minutes with closed lid.
