It is raining biopics both in Bollywood and Tollywood which are giving commercial movies a run for their money. Over the years, we have seen biopics on sports stars, political personalities and freedom fighters. Jodha Akbar, Bhaag Milka Bhaag and Mary Kom are some of the movies that paved a path for a slew of biopics.
2016, literally is a year of biopics where movies like Neerja, Azhar, Aligarh, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Sarbjit and Dangal were released and all of them received good talk. Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja went on to grab National award in the ‘Best Film’ category while Aamir Khan’s Dangal became the first Indian movie to collect 1900 crore at the worldwide BO.
In 2017, we have already seen Daddy and Haseena Parker on the big screen and are awaiting the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati that is slated for December 1 release.
As the biopics are doing well at the ticket counters, directors are on a lookout for such inspirational stories to prove their mettle. The makers are coming up with multitudinous biopics that are set for 2018 release. While there are both sports and non-sports biopics, today we would like to list non-sports biopics that intrigued us. Here we go.
Untitled Sanjay Dutt Biopic – Ranbir Kapoor
Being the son of Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, Sanjay had a huge legacy to carry forward. He tasted success and flops both in equal from the beginning of his career. However, drugs and arms case played a major role in messing up his life.
Raj Kumar Hirani, a good friend of Sanjay decided to show the ups and downs of the actor through this movie and Ranbir Kapoor is playing Sanjay onscreen. Now and then, we have seen leaked pictures of Ranbir from the sets of which which we can say that Ranbir is apt for the role and this is the first time, a biopic is being made on a living actor. The movie is all set for March 30, 2018, release.
The Accidental Prime Minister – Anupam Kher
Based on the life of ex-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the movie is based on Sanjay Baru’s book on the same name. Anupam Kher is enacting the role of Manmohan and the actor completely resembles our ex-PM in the recently released first look.
Manikarnika – Kangana Ranaut
Directed by one of the Tollywood ace directors Krish (Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi), the film has Kangana Ranaut in the lead role playing Manikarnika, The Jhansi Rani. The film which has a story by KV Vijayendra Prasad will bring the most talked about character during freedom live on the celluloid.
The Queen actress is currently busy in mastering horse and sword training and is prepping with great effort to bring the character alive on the big screen which can be witnessed when the film hits the screens.
Padman and Mogul – Akshay Kumar
Akki will be seen in the role of Arunachalam Muruganatham, a social entrepreneur from Tamil Nadu, who is the first to invent the low-cost sanitary napkins in India. The director R Balki should be lauded for his attempt as talking about periods is still considered a taboo in most parts of the country. Produced by Twinkle Khanna and Gauri Shinde, the film also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte where Amitabh Bachchan is seen in a cameo.
Padman, the movie made on low-cost sanitary napkins that are benefiting numerous women in the rural areas will hit the screens on April 13, 2018.
Mogul is about T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar who brought the much-needed change in the music world in the early 80’s. The rags-to-riches story of Gulshan is directed by Subhash Kapoor. Akshay will play the role of the music emperor.
Salute – Aamir Khan
Aamir who impressed us with Mangal Pandey and Dangal biopics is all set to entertain us with yet another interesting biopic Salute. Aamir plays the role of astronaut Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to travel to space.
Produced by himself, Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ronnie Screwvala, the film is reported to have Fatima Sana Shaikh as the wife of Aamir, who played his daughter in Dangal. Helmed by Mahesh Mathai, the name Saare Jahan Se Achcha is also considered for the movie.
Super 30 – Hrithik Roshan
Hrithik Roshan will be seen in the most interesting and intriguing biopic that will be on Anand Kumar, the founder of Super 30 who trains 30 talented candidates each year from economically backward sections for the IIT-JEE entrance exam. This Vikas Bahl film on Patna based mathematician is yet to go on floors.
Mahanati – Keerthy Suresh
One of the talented leading ladies of South Indian film industry back then, Savitri rose to fame with her hard work. Considered to be the great actors of all time, a biopic on the legendary actress piqued interest in many. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the flick features Keerthy Suresh in the titular role. Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Dulquer Salmaan, Mohan Babu, Shalini Pandey are seen in prominent roles.
Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy – Chiranjeevi
‘Megastar’ Chiranjeevi who was back after a hiatus of 10 years with Khaidi No 150 will be seen this time in a freedom fighter’s role. Directed by Surender Reddy and produced by Ram Charan, the film which is made on Rayalaseema freedom fighter Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy also features Nayanthara, Amitabh Bachchan, Kicha Sudeep, Vijay Sethupathi and Jagapati Babu in pivotal roles.
Biopic on actor and politician Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR)
Both Balakrishna and Ram Gopal Varma have announced that they will make a biopic on NTR. Initially, it was believed that RGV will direct the Balakrishna starrer. Later when Balayya announced it separately, RGV announced the title as Lakshmi’s NTR which he is making from the perspective of NTR’s widow Lakshmi Parvati. Apart from NTR’s biopic, RGV also announced a film on Sasikala.
Apart from these, we also have Boman Irani’s Jhalki based on the life of Noble Peace winner Kailash Satyarthi, a biopic on Kalpana Chawla played by Priyanka Chopra and Nawazuddin Siddique in the role of Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Monto.
Though not a biopic, we find Rajkummar Rao’s web series based on the life of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose also needs a mention here.
